It is a hassle-free way to spend your free time that is neither harmful to you, nor wasteful.
DIY CANADIAN SMOCKING CUSHIONS
Canadian smocking is a type of embroidery/stitching where folds are done through pulled stitches. When this pulling is done on the back side, a beautiful pattern is created in the front. People use this pattern in cushions, pillow covers, bags, or even their outfits. Here is a simple tutorial on how to master this technique.
Materials:
Satin cloth
Pencil/pen/sketch/marker
Scissors
Thread
Needle
Synthetic cotton
Supplies:

Method:
1. Take a piece of satin cloth and place it on a table, making sure the rough side is facing up.
2. Now, draw gridlines on the cloth such that each square formed is of size 3cm*3cm. i.e. draw lines at 3 cm distance horizontally as well as vertically.
3. Now, start drawing slanted lines in each alternate box, making sure that the lines in each column are facing away from each other, as shown in the video.
4. Insert a thread through the eye of a needle and knot the thread at the end, making sure the thread is double.
5. Now start stitching, starting from the bottom of the first box.
6. Insert the needle through (in and out) the bottom of the first box. Then, do the same to the top of the box. Now, pull the thread so that the cloth in that box bunches together. Knot it in place at least twice to make sure it doesn’t loosen.
7. Now, move on to the box in the next column and stick, starting from the bottom to the top, making sure not to pull the thread so much as there needs to be some distance between every two stitches. Again, knot the stitch in place.
8. Now, go to the next box in the first column and make another stitch and knot. Repeat the process until all the marked boxes have been stitched up.
9. Once the smocking is done, place another sating cloth below the smocked cloth, making sure the smooth sides are facing each other. I.e. the rough side of the satin cloth on the bottom should be facing the table/ground.
10. Now, do a back-stitch or mission-stitch on three sides. On the fourth side, stitch up half of it.
11. Now, using the opening in the fourth side, turn the cloth inside out.
12. Using the opening, stuff synthetic cotton inside the pillow. Start stuffing the cotton, a little at a time, making sure not to ignore the corners.
13. Once done, cut off the extra cloth, and, pushing the cloth inwards as shown, stitch it with a back stitch.
14. Voila! You Canadian Smocking cushion is now ready for use.
