Chakolya (Varan Phal | Dal Dhokli)


For cooking Dal:
Toor Dal - 1/2 cup
A pinch of Turmeric powder
Few cloves of Garlic

For Dough:
Atta/Wheat flour - 1 cup
Ajwain/Carom seeds - 1/4 Tsp
Salt to taste

For Chakolya:
Ghee - 2 Tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 Tsp
A pinch of Hing/Asafoetida powder
Water - 2 cups
Salt to taste
Chili powder - 1 Tsp
Coriander powder - 1 Tsp

For Garnishing:
Chopped Onions
Chopped Green chili
Chopped Coriander leaves

Step 1 – Add water to a pressure cooker [Buy: https://goo.gl/GsrKUQ ] and add toor dal, turmeric powder and a few cloves of garlic and pressure cook it for about 4-5 whistles.
Step 2 – In a mixing bowl, add aata, ajwain, salt and a little water and mix well to make a nice ad soft dough.
Step 3 – Taking a little of the dough, roll it until it form a large circle. Make sure it’s neither too thin nor too thick.
Step 4 – Make horizontal and vertical cuts into the rolled out dough using a kitchen knife, such that several small pieces of a square or diamond shapes are formed. Places these pieces on a plate.
Step 5 – Once the dal is cooked, take a wide saucepan (Buy: https://goo.gl/itHz5n ) and add ghee, mustard seeds, and pinch. Let it cook for some time. Once the mustard seeds start cackling, add the cooked dal to the pan.
Step 6 – Now, adding two cups of water to dilute the dal, season it with salt, chilli powder, and coriander powder and mix well.
Steps 7 – Once bubbles start forming, i.e. once the dal starts boiling, add the pieces of dough to it. Let it cook for about 10-15 minutes.
Step 8 – Turning off the stove, empty the contents of the pan into a large bowl and garnish the dish with finely chopped onions, green chilli and coriander leaves. A bit of lemon juice can be added to enhance the taste, if you so desire.
Step 9 – Your dish is now ready to be devoured. Serve it hot and enjoy a healthy meal with your family.
