How to do Gomukhasana - Cow Face Pose

6 years ago | Yoga and You
DESCRIPTION
GOMUKHASANA | Cow Face Pose
The name comes from the Sanskrit words Gou meaning "cow", Mukha meaning "face" or "mouth", and Asana meaning "posture". Incidentally, the word ‘Go’ also means light. So ‘Gomukh’ can also mean lightness of the head or light in the head. However, this asana gets its name because when one is performing this asana, the body resembles a cow’s face. The thighs and calves are placed in such a way that they are wide at one end and tapering at the other.

How to:
1. Start by sitting in vajrasana.
2. Lift the hips up and sit to the left side of your feet.
3. Take your right leg over and across your left leg. Your right knee must now be positioned directly above your left knee.
4. Your right feet must be lying beside your right hip. Make sure you are not sitting on your feet.
5. Take your left hand behind from below.
6. Take your right hand behind from above and clasp the fingers of both your hands.
7. Hold this posture for a few moments and take deep breaths.
8. To release, release one hand at a time.
9. Release the top leg first and then come back to Vajrasana.
10. Repeat the same on the other side!

Benefits:
• Relieves back-ache
• Relieves stiffness in shoulders and neck
• Alleviates tiredness and tension
• Induces relaxation
• Improves posture

Cautions:
People suffering from shoulder, neck, and knee pains must refrain from practising this asana.
If you suffer from backaches, it is best to consult a doctor before you do this asana and practice only under the supervision of a certified yoga instructor.
In case you are fat or obese, performing this exercise might be difficult. Start small. You can begin by trying to take your hands backwards (you don’t have to clasp the fingers), and simply stretching your legs and crossing one over the other. With time and patience, you will be able to perform the pose perfectly as it makes your body flexible and easy to stretch.

Best time:
It is best if the Gomukhasana is performed first thing in the morning. Its benefits are numerous. Your stomach and bowels must be empty when you practice this asana. Make sure you have your meals at least 10 to 12 hours before your practice.
