Preparatory poses for Eka Pada Koundinyasana II

8 years ago | Yoga and You
DESCRIPTION
The asana is dedicated to the sage Koundinya. Eka pada koundinyasana II is a split-legged arm balance that is sometimes dubbed "flying splits" as it resembles a front split hovering away from the floor. In this video, Nora Lim from TOTeM yoga studio shows us a few preparatory poses to be practised before attempting the Eka Pada Koundinyasana II - advanced arm balancing.

How to:
1. First, come onto all fours.
2. Lift your hips up and drop your head down, coming into the downward facing dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) posture.
3. Press your feet and palms firmly onto the ground. Do not tuck your toes.
4. Place a yoga block in front of you as shown.
5. Lift one leg up so you are in a one-legged dog position.
6. Now, bend and tuck your right knee in towards your right shoulder, resting it on your biceps.
7. Lift your leg back up.
8. Bring your leg back down and place your knee against your bicep.
9. Bend your elbows and lower yourself slightly, resting your chest against the yoga block.
10. Do not collapse your back, shoulders, hips or legs. Keep your chest slightly placed over the yoga block.
11. Lift your leg back up and lower it, coming back into the Downward facing dog posture.
12. Bend both your legs, coming onto all fours. Lower your back onto your feet, coming into the Child's Pose.
13. Finally, relax.

Avoided by:
It is advised for people with wrist, elbows, shoulders or lower back injuries do not practice this posture as it would prove to be too straining for the muscles.

Best time:
These stretches can be performed at any time or right before you go to sleep to have a peaceful sleep. But it is advised to perform these in the early hour’s right after you wake up as your joints would be relaxed at that time.
