How to: Purna Natarajasana and its Benefits

DESCRIPTION
The Natarajasana or the Lord of the Dance Pose has been inspired by the Hindu god Shiva. Shiva, also known as Nataraj, is also considered the lord of dance. He dances an energetic dance. The natarajasana pose needs to be done gracefully, almost like a dance, in order to derive maximum benefit from it. Today we will see how to do Purna Natarajasana and its benefits.

How to:
1. Start by standing straight.
2. Step your right foot forward and bring your arms to your sides.
3. As you inhale, bend your right leg backwards.
4. Hold on to the thumb of your right leg with your right hand.
5. Raise your left hand up and backwards and hold onto your right leg.
6. Now, using your hands, slowly pull your leg upwards.
7. Slowly, bend your head backwards and bring your leg to the crown of your head.
8. Hold this posture for a few deep breaths.
9. Slowly, letting go of your leg, lower your arms and leg back down, bringing both of your hands to your sides.
10. Step your right foot back, coming back to your starting posture.
11. Repeat the same on the other side.

Strengthens the muscles of hip, thighs and chest.
This asana increases your metabolism and helps in weight loss.
It gives your groin, abdominal organs, and thighs a good stretch.

Caution:
1. Avoid this asana at all costs if you have low blood pressure.
2. You could ask your instructor to help you gain balance when you begin practising this asana.
3. It is best that you consult a doctor before you do this asana.

Best time:
This asana must be practised on an empty stomach. You must make it a point to have your meals four to six hours before the practice so that the food is digested and the energy is ready to be expended. Also, make sure your bowels are empty before you practice. Yoga must be practised at dawn or dusk for best results.
